Our Egmont Key Express is one of our most popular trips for swimming, shelling, beachcoming, and exploring. Egmont Key is a Florida state park which is a barrier island separating Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The island is largely uninhabited except for some park rangers and the Tampa Bay ship's pilots. While you are on the island you can explore the ruins of Fort Dade (aka Egmont Key). There is also an active lighthouse (still in use today) that was built in the 1850. The south end of the island is a bird sanctuary, but the north end is open to beachcoming, shelling, and swimming. There are no restrooms on the island.
This trip can be physically challenging and is for agile and flexible adults and kids. You must be able to easily manage your own body weight on and off the bow (front) of the boat. This can be an issue and make it difficult to do this trip comfortably if you are not flexible and agile. Weather can also be an issue getting to the island and different sandbars and it is up to the captain's discretion where to take people safely.
The boat departs from Bradenton Beach Marina at 10:00AM and is back by 2:00PM. It takes about 35-40min to arrive and return which then allows for approximately two hours to explore the island.
What to bring? Sunscreen, bug spray, a towel, and water shoes. Small coolers for lunch and drinks are allowed. Alcohol is not permitted on the island but can be enjoyed on the boat and while standing on the shore. If you have a container into which you can transfer a beverage (i.e. water bottle or thermos), that can be brought onto the island.
